Most salaried employees in India see "EPF" deducted from their payslip every month without knowing exactly where it goes or how it grows. Here's the short version.

The 12% + 12% isn't what it looks like

Your own contribution is straightforward: 12% of your basic pay plus dearness allowance goes into your EPF account every month.

Your employer's 12% is where most people get confused. It doesn't all land in the same account as yours:

So on a ₹20,000 basic salary, your employer's ₹2,400 splits into roughly ₹1,250 for EPS and ₹1,150 for your EPF account — not the full ₹2,400 compounding alongside your money.

How the interest is calculated

EPFO declares an interest rate every year (8.25% in recent years, though it changes). That rate is applied monthly to your running balance, but the total interest for the year is credited to your account only once, usually near the end of the financial year.

In practice, this means your account earns interest on last year's closing balance plus every contribution made so far this year — so contributions made early in the year earn more interest for that year than contributions made in March.

A quick example

Say your basic pay is ₹20,000/month, you already have ₹1,00,000 in your account, and the rate is 8.25%. Over 15 years, with a modest 5% annual increment, your own contribution and your employer's EPF share (excluding EPS) compound together — the EPF Calculator runs this month-by-month and shows you the year-by-year split between your money, your employer's money, and the interest itself.

What about withdrawing early?

If you withdraw your PF after 5 or more years of continuous service (including service with previous employers, if the PF was transferred), the amount is tax-free. Withdraw before that with more than ₹50,000 in the account, and TDS applies — 10% if your PAN is linked, 20% if it isn't. You can avoid TDS even under 5 years by submitting Form 15G/15H if your total income is below the taxable limit.
