If you've asked family about naming a new baby in a Hindu household, you've probably heard some version of "the name should start with such-and-such sound, based on the rashi." Here's what that tradition actually means.
Rashi vs the zodiac sign you already know
Rashi is the Vedic (sidereal) moon sign — the zodiac sign the moon was positioned in at the exact time of birth, according to Hindu astrology. This is different from the sun sign used in Western horoscope columns, though both traditions share the same 12 names: Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) and Meen (Pisces).
Rashi is calculated from the precise date, time and place of birth — usually by a family astrologer or priest using a birth chart (janam kundli), not something you can work out from the date alone.
Where the naming letters come from
Each rashi is linked to a set of nakshatras (27 lunar mansions used in Vedic astrology), and each nakshatra is further divided into four padas (quarters) — 108 padas in total, 9 for each rashi. Traditionally, every pada is associated with a specific starting sound, so each rashi ends up with a set of nine possible starting sounds for a name.
For example, Mesh (Aries) is traditionally linked to sounds like Chu, Che, Cho, La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo and A — so a name like Lalit, Lakshya or Amit would be considered a fit.
Why lists vary slightly
You'll find small variations between different pandits, books and websites on the exact transliteration of these sounds — that's normal, since the tradition predates any single standardised spelling system, and regional practices differ. Treat any published chart (including ours) as a widely used reference, not a single official rule.
Using it without overthinking it
Many families follow the starting-sound tradition closely; others treat it as a nice-to-have and prioritise a name they simply love. Both are completely normal. If the tradition matters to your family, it's worth confirming the exact sound with whoever prepared the birth chart — spellings and interpretations can differ slightly from a general chart.
