Job forms, college applications and scholarships often ask for a percentage, while your marksheet shows a CGPA. Converting is easy once you know which formula your board or university uses.
The CBSE formula: CGPA × 9.5
For CBSE (Class 10 under CCE and many school boards), the official rule is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
So a CGPA of 8.6 is about 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%, and a perfect 10 is 95%.
Why 9.5? When CBSE introduced grading, it took the average marks of students who scored an A1 (top) grade across subjects, which came to about 95. Dividing that by 10 gave the 9.5 factor.

Quick conversion table (CGPA × 9.5)
| CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 10 | 95% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% |
| 9 | 85.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% |
| 8 | 76% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% |
| 7 | 66.5% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% |
| 6 | 57% |
| 5 | 47.5% |
When your university uses a different formula
Many universities and engineering colleges publish their own rule. Common ones are:
- CGPA × 10 (used by some universities for a 10-point scale)
- (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (used by some technical universities, e.g. older VTU/Mumbai University rules)
- (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 (used by some other universities)
If your marksheet or university website states a formula, always use that one — an employer or college will check your number against it. If nothing is stated, the CBSE formula is the most widely accepted estimate.
How to calculate marks percentage
If you have marks instead of a CGPA, the formula is:
Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100
Examples:
- 420 out of 500 → 420 ÷ 500 × 100 = 84%
- 512 out of 600 → 512 ÷ 600 × 100 = 85.33%
- Best of five subjects: add the five highest scores and divide by 500.
Marks ka percentage kaise nikale? (Hinglish)
Apne kul number (marks obtained) ko poore number (total marks) se divide kijiye aur 100 se guna kijiye. Jaise 450 mein se 380 aaye, to 380 ÷ 450 × 100 = 84.44%. CGPA ho to use 9.5 se guna kijiye — 7.8 CGPA ≈ 74.1%.
What division is my percentage?
Most Indian boards and universities use these bands (rules vary slightly):
- 75% and above: distinction
- 60% and above: first division
- 45–59%: second division
- 33% (or 35%) and above: pass
The Percentage Calculator shows the typical band along with your answer, and the working so you can copy the method into a form or notebook.
