Percentage formulas, with examples
Marks percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. If you scored 420 out of 500, that is 420 ÷ 500 × 100 = 84%. For a total of 600 (six subjects), divide by 600 instead.
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. So 18% of ₹2,500 = 0.18 × 2,500 = ₹450. To find what percent one number is of another, divide and multiply by 100: 45 is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75% of 60.
Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A salary going from ₹40,000 to ₹46,000 is (46,000 − 40,000) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 15% increase. A negative answer means a decrease.
CGPA to percentage (CBSE) = CGPA × 9.5. A CGPA of 8.6 is about 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. CBSE set the 9.5 factor from the average marks of top scorers; many universities use their own formula (for example, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or CGPA × 10), so use your institution's rule where it gives one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage of marks?
Divide your total marks obtained by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. For example, 420 out of 500 = 420 ÷ 500 × 100 = 84%.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For CBSE, multiply your CGPA by 9.5 — so 9.0 CGPA ≈ 85.5%. Universities can use different formulas, so check your marksheet or university rules if they specify one.
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 200 to 250 is (250 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = 25% increase.
How do I find X% of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 15% of 400 = 15 ÷ 100 × 400 = 60.
What percentage is first division?
At most Indian boards and universities, 60% and above is first division, 45–59% is second division and 33% (or 35% at some boards) is the pass mark. 75% and above is often called distinction. Rules vary, so check your board.
