How the SSC CHSL typing test works
The SSC CHSL skill test is a straight typing test: a passage appears on screen and you type it for ten minutes. Notices state the target two ways — 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi, which the commission also writes as 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. Both mean the same thing; a "word" is counted as five keystrokes, including spaces. The test is qualifying, so it does not add to your rank — but failing it takes you out of the process entirely.
How to practise for it
Take a full-length attempt rather than short bursts — the difficulty of these tests is holding a steady pace for the whole 10 minutes, not hitting a high speed for thirty seconds. Type the passage as it appears, including punctuation and capitals, because errors are deducted from your effective speed.
- Aim slightly above the target. If the requirement is 35 WPM, practise until you sit comfortably 5 WPM above it. Exam-day nerves cost speed.
- Don't look at the keyboard. Every glance down loses rhythm, and rhythm is what carries you through a long passage.
- Fix mistakes as they happen. Backspacing costs time, but leaving errors costs more, because accuracy is folded into the score.
- Practise in the same layout you will use in the exam — especially for Hindi, where InScript and Remington are completely different.
Typing in Hindi
Hindi typing tests are usually taken in the Mangal font with the InScript layout. Switch your computer's keyboard to Hindi (or install Google Input Tools) before starting, so your practice matches the real exam. This tool accepts whatever your keyboard produces.

Is the SSC CHSL typing test the same as SSC CGL?
No. CHSL is a typing test where you copy a passage at 35 WPM in English or 30 in Hindi. CGL's skill test for Tax Assistant is a Data Entry Skill Test, measured in key depressions per hour rather than words per minute. The practice is similar, but the target and the way it is scored are not.
How many mistakes are allowed in the SSC CHSL typing test?
Errors are counted against your speed rather than being separately capped, so accuracy matters as much as pace. Most notices allow a small error margin — commonly around 5–7% — and the exact figure is stated in the notice for that year. Practise at a speed you can hold cleanly instead of your absolute maximum.
Which font is used for the Hindi typing test?
Mangal font with the InScript keyboard layout is the usual combination for SSC Hindi typing. Some centres also allow Krutidev with the Remington layout — the notice for your exam will say which. Practise in the same layout you will sit the test in.
