Every government exam notification has an age rule, and it is one of the most common reasons forms get rejected. The rule is never "your age today" — it is your age as on a fixed date printed in the notice. Here is how to read it and check yourself in under a minute.
What does "age as on" mean?
The notification fixes a crucial date (also called the cut-off date), for example "Age limit: 18–27 years as on 01-08-2026". Your age is calculated on that date, no matter when you fill the form or sit the exam.
So two things decide eligibility:
- Your exact date of birth (as on your 10th certificate), and
- The "as on" date in the notice.
You can enter both into the free Age Calculator and read your exact age in years, months and days on that date.
A worked example
Say the limit is 18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026.
- Born 2 August 1999: on 1 August 2026 the candidate is 26 years, 11 months and 30 days. They have not yet completed 27, so they are eligible — even though they turn 27 the next day.
- Born 1 August 1999: on 1 August 2026 they complete exactly 27 years. Most notices express the same rule as "born not before 02-08-1999", so check the date-of-birth range if the notice gives one — it settles edge cases like this.
- Born 15 March 2004: on 1 August 2026 they are 22 years, 4 months and 17 days — comfortably eligible.
Tip: many notices also print the rule as a date range, such as "born not before 02-08-1999 and not later than 01-08-2008". If the range is given, that is the final word.
Typical age limits (always check the current notice)
| Exam | Typical age limit (General) |
|---|---|
| SSC CHSL | 18–27 years |
| SSC CGL | 18–32 years (varies by post) |
| SSC GD Constable | 18–23 years |
| UPSC Civil Services | 21–32 years |
| IBPS PO | 20–30 years |
| IBPS Clerk | 20–28 years |
| SBI PO | 21–30 years |
| NDA | 16.5–19.5 years |
These are the commonly notified limits. They can change from one year to the next, so treat this table as a guide and confirm with the official notification.
Age relaxation by category
For most central government recruitment (SSC, UPSC, railways, banks), the upper age limit is relaxed as follows:
- OBC (non-creamy layer): 3 years
- SC / ST: 5 years
- PwBD: 10 years (13 for OBC-PwBD, 15 for SC/ST-PwBD)
- Ex-servicemen: usually 3 years after deducting military service
So for a 18–27 limit, an OBC candidate can be up to 30 and an SC/ST candidate up to 32 on the crucial date. State exams set their own rules, which can be more generous for residents of that state.
How to check your age in 3 steps
- Open the Age Calculator and enter your date of birth.
- Change the "as on" date to the crucial date in your notification (there are quick buttons for 1 January and 1 August).
- Compare your years, months and days with the limit, adding any relaxation for your category.
Common mistakes
- Using today's date. Your age today does not matter; only the crucial date does.
- Rounding up. Age is counted in completed years. 26 years 11 months is still 26.
- Wrong date of birth. Use the date on your 10th certificate — that is what will be verified.
- Forgetting relaxation proof. Relaxation needs a valid category certificate in the prescribed format.
