How age is calculated (and why the "as on" date matters)
Your age in completed years is the number of birthdays you have had up to a given date. To get years, months and days, the calculator counts full years first, then full months after your last birthday, then the remaining days. When the day of the month hasn't been reached yet, it borrows the days of the previous month — so the result matches what you would count on a calendar.
For exams, the date that matters is not today but the "crucial date" or "age as on" date printed in the notification. For example, if an exam requires candidates to be 18–27 years as on 1 August 2026, a candidate born on 2 August 1999 is 26 years, 11 months and 30 days on that date — eligible — even though they turn 27 the very next day. Always check this date and any age relaxation (usually 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST and 10 years for PwBD in central government exams).
Worked example: date of birth 15 March 2004, age as on 1 August 2026. From 15 March 2004 to 15 March 2026 is 22 full years. From 15 March to 15 July is 4 full months. From 15 July to 1 August is 17 days. So the age is 22 years, 4 months and 17 days.

How do I calculate my exact age?

How do I check my age for an exam?
Open the exam notification and find the "age as on" or crucial date (often 1 January or 1 August of the exam year). Enter that date in the "as on" box. If your age falls between the minimum and maximum limit (plus any relaxation for your category), you are eligible.
Does it handle leap years and 29 February birthdays?
Yes. Day counts use the real calendar, so leap years are included. If you were born on 29 February, your next birthday in a non-leap year is counted as 28 February.
Is the age calculated in completed years?
Yes. The years figure is completed years, the way official forms and exams use it. You are not counted a year older until your birthday has actually arrived.
What is the age relaxation for OBC, SC and ST?
For most central government exams (SSC, UPSC, railways), the upper age limit is relaxed by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 5 years for SC/ST and 10 years for PwBD (more when combined with category). State exams can differ — always follow the notification.
