Every exam season, thousands of applications get held up over the same small thing: the photograph's background. Portals want a plain, light background, and a photo taken against a wall, curtain or doorway often gets flagged. Here's what the major Indian exam forms generally expect — and how to fix your photo in a minute, for free.
What exam portals usually want
The exact wording changes between exams, but the common requirements are:
- Plain, light background — usually white, sometimes light grey or blue.
- Even lighting, with no strong shadows behind you or on your face.
- A recent colour photo, front-facing, neutral expression.
- A specific pixel size and KB limit for the upload (this varies a lot by exam).
- Some forms also want your name and the date written on the photo.

SSC
SSC recruitment forms typically ask for a recent colour photograph on a plain light background within a set file size. A white background is the safe choice unless the notice says otherwise.
UPSC
UPSC applications expect a clear, recent colour photo with a plain background and good lighting. Photos with busy or dark backgrounds are a common reason for rejection.
Railway (RRB — NTPC, Group D, ALP)
RRB forms ask for a colour photograph and a signature, each within a fixed size and KB range, on a plain light background. The photo and signature sizes are strict, so resizing matters as much as the background.
Other forms (banking, state PSCs, university)
Bank exams (IBPS and similar), state PSC forms and university admissions follow the same pattern: plain light background, recent colour photo, and a specific size/KB limit for the upload.
