"Transparent background" means the area around your subject is see-through, so whatever is behind the image shows through — a coloured slide, a poster, another photo. It's what you need for logos, product cut-outs, stickers and signatures. Here's how it works and how to make one for free.
Why a transparent PNG (not JPG)
The file format matters. JPG cannot store transparency — it always fills empty areas with a colour (usually white). Only formats like PNG keep areas see-through. So any time you want a transparent result, you must save it as a PNG, not a JPG.
If you export a "no background" image as JPG, you'll just get a white box around your subject. That's the single most common mistake.
When you actually need transparency
- Logos and graphics placed over coloured backgrounds
- Product cut-outs for banners, ads and thumbnails
- Signatures dropped into documents without a white box
- Stickers and design elements
- Profile pictures you'll place on different backgrounds
If you just need a plain white or coloured background (like a passport photo), you don't need transparency — a JPG is fine and smaller.
How to make a transparent PNG for free
