Frequently asked questions
Why does the compass need motion permission?
Your phone's magnetometer and orientation sensors are only exposed to a website after you explicitly allow “Motion & Orientation Access” — this is a one-time browser permission, and the readings never leave your device.
Does it show true north or magnetic north?
Magnetic north — the direction your phone's magnetometer actually senses. True north (the geographic pole) differs from magnetic north by a small, location-dependent amount called declination, which this simple compass doesn't correct for. For most everyday uses the difference doesn't matter.
Why does the reading drift or seem wrong?
Phone magnetometers pick up interference from metal objects, magnets, speakers, car dashboards and other electronics nearby. If the reading looks off, move away from metal and wave your phone in a slow figure-8 a couple of times — this is the same recalibration gesture used by map apps.
Does this work on a laptop or desktop?
No — laptops and desktops don't have the magnetometer a compass needs. Open this page on a phone or tablet.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes. iOS will show a one-time prompt asking to allow “Motion & Orientation Access” when you tap Start — allow it, and the compass works the same as on Android.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Your phone's sensor readings are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server or stored.
