Metal Detector
A free phone metal detector. Uses your phone's built-in compass sensor to sense nearby magnetic metal, with a live signal-strength gauge and an optional detector-style beep. Works on Android Chrome and iPhone Safari — anywhere the Compass tool works.
Use it in 3 steps
Tap Start and hold your phone flat, away from metal, magnets and speakers, while it reads the normal background field for a moment.
Move your phone slowly near the area you want to check. The gauge and % signal rise as the magnetic field changes.
A higher percentage and a faster beep mean a bigger disturbance — likely magnetic metal close by. Recalibrate if you move to a new location.
Where this helps
Sweep along a wall to spot a rough change in signal from metal studs, nails or rebar (a dedicated stud finder is more reliable for this).
Get a rough sense of direction when searching for a dropped key, screw or other small ferrous item on a plain surface.
See your phone's magnetometer react in real time — a fun way to show how sensitive the sensor is.
Sweep near a bag, case or wall to check for an embedded magnet or magnetic clasp.
Benefits
- No app install — runs directly using your phone's built-in magnetometer.
- Live percentage gauge plus an optional detector-style beep that speeds up near metal.
- One-tap recalibration if you move somewhere with a different background field.
- Free, and everything is processed on your device.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a real, accurate metal detector?
No — treat it as a fun, rough indicator, not a real detector. It reads your phone's compass magnetometer, which is built for direction-finding, not metal detection. It mainly reacts to magnetic (ferrous) metals like iron, steel and nickel at close range, and is far less sensitive and reliable than a real metal detector or stud finder.
Can it find gold, aluminium or coins?
Usually not reliably. A passive magnetometer like this senses disturbances mainly from magnetic (ferrous) materials. Gold, aluminium, copper and most coins are only weakly magnetic or non-magnetic, so they often produce little or no signal, unlike real metal detectors which use active electromagnetic induction to find all kinds of metal.
Why do I need to calibrate first?
Earth's natural magnetic field, plus your phone's own components, create a background reading that varies by location and device. Calibrating away from obvious metal captures that background level as a baseline, so the gauge shows the extra disturbance caused by something nearby, not the constant background field.
Why does it say my browser isn't supported?
It uses the same motion sensors as the Compass tool, so it needs a phone with an orientation/compass sensor and a browser that exposes it — Android Chrome and iPhone Safari both work (iPhone will ask for a motion-access permission first). Laptops and desktops without these sensors, and some minority browsers, aren't supported.
Why does the reading drift or give false signals?
Magnetometers are sensitive to nearby electronics, speakers, metal furniture, and even the phone's own case or battery. Moving to a new spot, tilting the phone, or nearby devices can all shift the reading — recalibrate whenever you change location.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free with no app install. It runs entirely on your device and nothing is uploaded.
