Not measuring

Tap Start and allow microphone access. Readings are an estimate, not a calibrated dB SPL measurement — your audio is analysed on your device and never uploaded or stored.

Measure sound level in 3 steps

01
Tap Start

Allow microphone access when your browser asks — the audio is analysed on your device and never uploaded.

02
Read the live gauge

See the current sound level in decibels, colour-coded from quiet to harmful, updating in real time.

03
Check min, max and average

Let it run for a while to see the loudest peak, the quietest moment, and the average level over your session.

Where a sound meter helps

Checking room noise

See roughly how loud a room, office or classroom is before deciding it needs soundproofing or a quieter spot.

Traffic or neighbour noise

Get a rough reading of how loud outside traffic or a noisy neighbour actually is, to back up a complaint or decision.

Hearing safety at events

Check if a concert, gym class or workplace is near or above the ~85 dB level where prolonged exposure risks hearing damage.

Quick sanity checks

Compare two rooms, two fans, or two machines side by side to see which is genuinely louder.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a calibrated decibel (dB SPL) meter?

No. Every phone and laptop microphone has different sensitivity, gain and filtering, so a browser-based tool can only give an estimate, not a lab-accurate dB SPL reading like a dedicated sound level meter. Use it for comparisons and rough checks, not certified measurements.

Why does my reading look off compared to another app?

Different apps assume different reference levels for your specific microphone, so absolute numbers can vary between tools even when the relative loudness (louder vs quieter) agrees. Use the calibration offset slider to nudge this tool's reading toward a meter you trust.

What decibel level is dangerous?

Continuous exposure above about 85 dB (roughly heavy traffic) can damage hearing over time, and very loud sounds like a rock concert (~105–110 dB) can cause harm in minutes. These are general reference figures — for anything safety-critical, use certified equipment and official guidance.

Does it record or upload my audio?

No. The microphone stream is analysed live in your browser to compute a loudness number, and is never recorded, saved or sent to any server.

Why do I need to allow microphone access?

The browser needs permission to read the microphone stream to measure sound level — this is a standard one-time browser permission, the same one video-calling sites use.

Does this work on a laptop?

Yes — any device with a working microphone and a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) works, though laptop mics vary a lot in sensitivity, so treat the numbers as a rough guide.
