Frequently asked questions
Is this a real seismometer?
No. This uses your phone's ordinary accelerometer, which is far less sensitive and not calibrated like real seismometers, which use specialised, heavily isolated sensors. Use this for rough, relative vibration checks (like a washing machine) — never to detect earthquakes or make any safety decision.
How is the vibration calculated?
It reads your phone's accelerometer (which includes gravity) and continuously separates out the slow-moving “tilt/gravity” part from the fast “shake” part, then reports the shake magnitude in g (where 1g is normal Earth gravity). This isolates actual vibration from you simply tilting or moving the phone around.
Why does it show 0 when I'm not touching my phone?
That's expected — if the surface it's resting on isn't vibrating, there's no shake component to detect, so the reading settles near zero.
Does this work on a laptop?
No — laptops don't reliably expose the motion sensors this needs. Open this page on a phone or tablet.
